The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most sacred days in Islam, days loved by Allah and filled with abundant opportunity for reward.

What Is Dhul-Hijjah?

Dhul-Hijjah translates as “the month of pilgrimage.” It’s during this time that over two million Muslims from around the world travel to Mecca to perform Hajj, a once-in-a-lifetime journey and one of the five pillars of Islam.

Even if you are not among the pilgrims this year, you can still benefit greatly from these ten days. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

Here are five powerful ways to make the most of these blessed days:

1. Increase Your Good Deeds

The rewards for good actions are multiplied during Dhul-Hijjah. Whether it is praying more, giving charity, being kind to others, or helping someone in need, every small deed carries immense weight. Strive to fill your days with righteousness, big or small and do so with sincerity.

2. Engage in Constant Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

Make your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah ﷻ. Recite:

  • Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
  • Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah)
  • La ilaha illallah (There is no deity but Allah)

These simple phrases, repeated with sincerity, bring peace to the heart and a great reward.

3. Fast the First Nine Days, Especially the Day of Arafah

Fasting during Dhul-Hijjah, especially on the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah), is highly recommended. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

If you are unable to fast all nine days, aim to fast at least on the Day of Arafah to gain this powerful reward.

4. Give Generously in Charity

Charity is always encouraged in Islam, but during these days, the rewards are even greater. Whether it is money, food, clothing, or your time – give what you can. Support those in need, contribute to good causes and do it from a place of compassion and faith.

5. Offer the Qurbani (Sacrificial Animal)

For those who are able, performing the Qurbani is a sacred act of worship during Dhul-Hijjah. This act honors the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and his willingness to sacrifice his son in submission to Allah’s will.

Qurbani is not just about the act of slaughter – it is a reminder to reflect on what we need to sacrifice in our own lives:

  • Is it sleep, so you can wake for Fajr?
  • Is it money, to help the less fortunate?
  • Is it time, to benefit others or deepen your connection with Allah?

Think about what you can give up to grow spiritually.

Final Thoughts

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are a gift from Allah ﷻ, an opportunity to earn rewards, reflect on our spiritual journey and grow closer to our Creator. Use this time wisely.

Be mindful. Stay consistent. Spread goodness.

May Allah bless us all and allow us to make the most of these ten sacred days. Ameen.
